New Zealand Coordinate Conversions - common conversions

This list provides some select commonly used coordinate conversions. Use the convert link to convert coordinates, or the customise link to change options such as order of coordinates (easting/northing vs northing/easting).

WGS 84

Conversions to and from WGS84 are commonly requested. However be aware that data respresented as WGS84 is often actually in terms of NZGD2000. In practice there is no way to determine accurate WGS84 coordinates in New Zealand. However WGS84 is aligned with the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) which is directly accessible within New Zealand. For more information on these issues see the LINZ website.

Also note that these conversions depend on the date of the data. The conversions below use the current date. To use a different date select the Customise link.

Historic coordinate systems

Before the adoption of New Zealand Geodetic Datum 2000 the national datum was New Zealand Geodetic datum 1949, and the mapping projection was New Zealand Map Grid (NZMG). The following conversion can be used to convert these to the current equivalents.
